PORTALES, N.M. — Junior guard
John Gilliam's (San Bernardino, Calif./Upland HS/Chaffey College) poured in a team-best 14 points and dished out four assists to help the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team (7-15; LSC 0-9) stay close with sixth-ranked Angelo State early on, but the Rams (20-1; LSC 9-0) pulled away for a 69-49 Lone Star Conference win, Saturday at Greyhound Arena. Angelo State remains as only team with an unblemished record in league play.
The lead changed hands four times early on, with
Lawrence Domingo (Jr., F, Union City, Calif./Community Charter Early College HS/Stoneridge Prep) giving ENMU its final lead, 8-7, on a layup with 16:39 left in the first half. The Rams answered with a 7-0 run to take a 14-8 lead on a Demario Mayfield jumper with 13:30 left in the period. Treys from Gilliam and
Chris Wyms (Jr., G, Carson, Calif. / King Drew Medical Magnet HS / Cerritos College) sandwiched around a Chris Jones layup pulled ENMU within two points. The Hounds could come no closer, but managed to stay within striking distance and only trailed by six at halftime.
Angelo State opened the second half with an 8-2 run and slowly pulled away for the win.
Michael Randle (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/James Madison HS/Paris JUCO) scored nine points while Domingo chipped in eight points and four rebounds. Mayfield paced ASU with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Cameron University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT.
