PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University Greyhounds baseball team fell to the Cameron University Aggies 7-6 Friday at Greyhound field, after taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Three Greyhounds (5-15, 1-8 LSC) recorded multiple hits in the game, led by
Justin Paul (Jr., Papillion, Neb. / Highland CC) who went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs.
Matthew Burks (Sr., Vacaville, Calif. / Diablo Valley College) went 3-for-4 on the night and
Chris Sanders (Sr., Murrieta, Calif. / Palomar College) pushed his hitting streak to eight games after going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
James Gray (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla. / East Carolina University) got the start for the Greyhounds and put in 5.2 innings of work. The starter recorded four shutout innings until in the top of the fifth he gave up two runs, finishing the night with four earned runs and six strikeouts. Gray now leads the teams in strikeouts on the season with 30.
Dylan Montano (R-Sr., Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia HS) also put in 1.1 innings from the mound, throwing two strikeouts and giving up only one hit and no runs.
The Greyhounds pulled within one late in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but failed to bring in the tying run at third base with only one out in the inning. The ninth inning saw the Greyhounds go three up and three down.
Eastern recorded 10 hits in the game while the Aggies (10-13, 4-8 LSC) had 15. The Greyhounds did play exceptionally well defensively, recording no errors. Highlighting their fielding was third baseman
Dylan Nault's (R-Jr., Anaheim, Calif. / Cypress College) catch to start the top of the fifth inning, where he made an outstanding diving catch to his left for the first out.
The Greyhounds continue their four game series against Cameron Saturday for a doubleheader with the start time slated for 1:00 p.m.
