PORTALES, N.M. —
Melissa Carnero scored 20:07 into Wednesday's Lone Star Conference opener, to give the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (2-4-1; LSC 0-1) the lead. West Texas A&M (3-3; LSC 1-0) responded with a pair of goals for the 2-1 victory at ENMU Soccer Field.
The Greyhounds were 3-0-1 against The Lady Buffs in the previous four meetings and only allowed a single goal over that stretch. The game marked WT's first victory over Eastern since a 1-0 decision at ENMU Soccer Field on October 26, 2012.
Carnero tapped in a shot midway through the opening half after taking a cross pass from
Melissa Moxley. The Lady Buffs responded 6:13 later, when Rachel Herring netter the equalizer. With 7:57 left in the first half, Khadidra Debesette beat a defender to tally the game winning goal.
WT held a commanding lead in shots in the first half, but just a 3-2 edge in the second half, which was interrupted by a lightning delay. The delay was approximately 1:15, with the contest resuming at 6:27 p.m.
Karissa Stinson made four saves for ENMU, while Courtney Dippel had two for West Texas A&M.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will conclude their home stand on Saturday against Texas A&M-International. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
