SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — After a long lightning delay, the Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team (3-1-2) struck just 25 seconds into the game. St. Mary's (4-3) managed to score three unanswered goals in the second half, to hand the Greyhounds their first setback of the season, 3-1.
The contest marked just the third game in which Eastern had trailed this season. The other two were the season opener against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and a 2-0 deficit at Wayland Baptist.
Ryan McManus fired a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, which deflected off Rattler keeper Mitchell Kilmer to give ENMU the early advantage. Wren May netted the equalizer 8:58 into the second half from 30 yards out, and Aaron Dunks staked St. Mary's to a 2-1 lead less than 10 minutes later on a penalty kick. Arturo Sanchez tallied an insurance goal with less than 10 minutes to play and the Rattlers held on, despite a late flurry of shots from the Hounds.
The Greyhounds held a 20-13 edge in total shots and an 8-4 lead in corners. The Rattlers enjoyed a slim 7-6 lead in shots on goal.
James Gutierrez made four saves for ENMU, while Kilmer had five for St. Mary's.
The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team will visit St. Edwards on Sunday afternoon. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
