Volleyball Records Fifth-Straight Sweep for First Time Since 2001

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team picked up its fifth-straight 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) sweep, besting UTPB in front of 250 fans at Greyhound Arena on Tuesday evening. The win gives the Greyhounds a 15-10 record on the season and a 10-5 mark in conference play while the five-straight sweeps are the most by an ENMU volleyball team since 2001.

"As far as the sweeps are concerned, it's definitely a goal of ours, but the W is more important," ENMU Head Coach Sia Poyer said following the fifth-straight win. "In the big scheme of things, it's nice. I hope the team looks at it as they are getting better and playing good volleyball. We finished it and haven't given other teams a chance."

Junior Brooklyn Biel accounted for 17 kills and hit .429 on the night to pace the offense. Senior Lauren Frye added 14 as the duo produced 31 of the team's 47 kills on the evening. Junior Amanda Dietz and freshman Sarah Tuioti-Mariner each picked up five kills in the winning effort. Junior setters Alexis Aguirre and Tiana Roebuck set up the offense nicely, picking up 25 and 19 assists, respectively. Andrea Aguilar and Talaitupu Faumui aided the defensive effort with 18 and 13 digs.

"She was making high contact on her shots," Poyer said on Biel's performance tonight. "She was much more disciplined in her swings, hitting it more over the block. She was able to see the blocker a lot better. Most of her swings went past the blocker which was great."

The Greyhounds return to the court on Friday, Nov. 4 when they travel to Denton to take on Texas Woman's University. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
