PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University basketball team suffered an 83-61 setback to St. Mary's on Tuesday evening at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio. The loss moves the Greyhounds to 1-2 on the year.
"Tonight was a great moment of exposure and growth for our team," ENMU Head Coach
Tres Segler said. "I really did a poor job of preparing our guys for what St. Mary's did offensively. They are a really hard hitting, tough, program and I didn't give my guys enough time to prepare for that. We had a very quick turnaround after our classic games at West Texas and I didn't prepare them well enough in that short amount of time."
"St. Mary's did some great things and they figured out their identity tonight as a team. We know our identity as a team and I just didn't do a good job of holding us to that standard."
Senior guard
CoRnell Neal led the 'Hounds with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. The Midwest City, Okla., native knocked down a pair of threes and added three assists. Juniors
Chris Lewis and
Marquise Harris each added 10 points.
Arcaim Lallemand and Lewis each pulled down five boards to lead the way for Eastern.
"This is a great preview of the physicality that the Lone Star Conference will hold for us," Segler added. "I know that our guys understand the physical play it takes to win and I expect us to bounce back this week with some physical practices that will help us grow. The best thing about tonight was looking in my players' eyes in the locker room after the game and telling them the truth. We know what we have to do to be great and it's now our job to see that through."
The Greyhounds head to San Angelo on Saturday for a matchup with Howard Payne at the Angelo State Tournament. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. against the Yellow Jackets. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics and @ENMU_Hoops on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
