CANYON, Texas –Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball guard
CoRnell Neal knocked down a three with four-seconds on the clock to lift the Greyhounds past Southern Nazarene 76-73 at the PAK-A-SAK Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M. The win pulls the 'Hounds back to the .500 mark on the season at 3-3.
"I was so proud of how our guys finished that game," ENMU Head Coach
Tres Segler said. "Southern Nazarene did a great job of pressing late and causing a few silly turnovers on our part. We fought through adversity and made some really tough plays to win. This season has already given us so many opportunities for growth and tonight was one where those learning moments paid off for us."
After Eastern took a three point lead with 18 seconds to play following
Chris Wyms' conversion of the old-fashioned three point play from the charity stripe, SNU's LB Willis went coast-to-coast and tied the game with a three of his own. Eastern called a timeout with eight seconds to play, drawing up a play for Neal to put up the game-winning shot. The senior guard did not disappoint, knocking down the jumper and giving the 'Hounds their second-straight win.
"They made a wild three point shot off the glass to tie the game," Segler said. "My guys were completely calm and composed . I am so proud of them for being tough and finishing the game together."
Joe Clarke led the way offensively for ENMU, picking up a game-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting and adding seven points from the charity stripe.
Chris Lewis notched his first double-double of the season, with 14 points and 10 boards in 34 minutes. Neal finished the afternoon with 16 points while junior forward
Andre Hughes had 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for the Greyhounds.
Arcaim Lallemand reeled in a game-high 11 rebounds as ENMU outrebounded SNU, 45-32.
"
Chris Wyms took five charges and
CoRnell Neal makes a huge game winning three. Our bigs really blocked out and rebounded tough.
Joe Clarke stepped up and played a great game for us. I am so excited with the growth of this team already on the season."
Eastern dished out a season-high 15 assists, led by Neal with six. Much like the early portion of the season, the Greyhounds dominated in the paint, outscoring the Crimson Storm, 42-24.
The Greyhounds wrap up the PAK-A-SAK Tournament tomorrow against Wayne State. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. For the latest news, follow @ENMUAthletics and @ENMU_Hoops on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and visit goeasternathletics.com.
