GOODWELL, OKLAHOMA— For the fifth straight year, the Eastern New Mexico baseball team has started their season 2-0, getting a 3-0 win followed by a 10-5 victory over Oklahoma Pan Handle University Saturday in their season opener.
Three Greyhounds (2-0) finished the day batting over .400, with Charles Sandberg Jr. leading the way hitting .444 from the plate. Jacob Cluff and Wesley Jordan hit .429 and an even .400, respectively. Sandberg finished with four hits, two extra base knockers, two RBIs and a .778 slugging percentage.
Perhaps more impressive than the Greyhound offense which had a .317 batting average as a team, was the pitching of Jerrott Gray, who in his first start for Eastern pitched seven scoreless innings and registered a complete game in the first contest of the double-header. The big lefty threw four strikeouts while only giving up one walk and seven hits.
The first of the two games saw ENMU score two runs in the second inning with their third coming in the top of the sixth. As mentioned above, it was Gray's shutout performance from the mound that had the Aggies (0-2) scratching their heads.
The second game actually saw OPSU take a 2-1 lead after the first, then push their lead higher after scoring one in the second as well. What followed was two scoreless innings until the Hounds erupted in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Even though the Aggies would get two more runs, ENMU put in four more insurance runs to take the 10-5 victory.
Kieth Kozak got the start for the Hounds, pitching four innings while giving up three runs and four walks. Jarron Hill came in as relief for one inning, throwing one strikeout and allowing no runs. Alec Lemmon also made an appearance, throwing four innings while striking out a game-high four batters and allowing only two runs.
Sandberg and Daniel Ward each drove in two runs during the contest, with the former recording a game-high three hits in five at bats. Five other Greyhounds recorded an RBI as well.
The Hounds will take the field again Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (MT).
