Volleyball Comeback Effort Falls Short to Lubbock Christian, 3-2

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision on the road to Lubbock Christian, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 15-9. Eastern rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set. The loss drops the Greyhounds to 4-5 on the year as the team is set to start conference play at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
 
The Greyhounds and Lady Chaps went back and forth in the first set, featuring six ties and five different lead changes. Courtney Lawson and Jennifer Martinez led the offensive charge for Eastern with three kills apiece in the opening frame. Despite leading 19-17, Lubbock Christian closed the set on an 8-3 run to take an early 1-0 lead, 25-22.
 
Eastern was unable to overcome a significant deficit in the second set, dropping the point, 25-22. Brooklyn Biel and Lauren Frye each picked up a pair of blocks in the frame while Biel led all players in the set with four kills.
 
Frye found a rhythm in the third set, allowing Eastern to make up a game, 25-22. The Greyhounds overcame a 21-16 deficit to win the set on a 11-2 run. Lawson rattled off nine-straight points while serving and three of Frye's six kills came on that run in the third.
 
The Green and Silver built off the momentum from claiming the third set to push the match to a decisive fifth set, winning 25-20 in the fourth. Four different Greyhounds picked up blocks and Eastern hit a match-high, .267 offensively.
 
The Greyhounds were never able to build momentum in the final set, falling behind 5-2 and dropping the frame 15-12. Frye and Lawson each earned a pair of kills in the final set.
 
Frye, Lawson and Biel all finished with double-digit kills while Andrea Aguilar, Alexis Aguirre and Lawson posted double-digit digs.
