Brockman Hits Grand Slam as Hounds Open Series Against TWU

Friday, March 16, 2018

PORTALES, NM —Sophomore Samantha Brockman cracked the first grand slam of the season, as the Eastern New Mexico University softball team (13-15; LSC 6-8) opened a Lone Star Conference series at Greyhound Softball Field. Texas Woman's (17-10; LSC 7-4) picked up a 5-4 win in the series opener, although senior Erikka Burke bashed her 31st career homer. The Pioneers also held on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

"I'm of course disappointed in tonight's losses, but I am proud of the way we battled back," said Heaad Coach Katie Welborn. "I wish that we could have capitalized a little more on the base runners left on base. I'm proud of my pitching. Kim threw a great game and Hanna did her job twice.
As per usual, the long ball is fun to watch and all the girls have the ability to make it happen. Erikka hit another homerun tonight and is not going to stop there, I'm sure. And of course, Samantha Brockman came up huge with a Grand Slam in the bottom of the seventh. Wish we could put a few more hits like those together. We will be ready to go tomorrow."

In the Record Book
  • The grand slam was ENMU's first since last March, when Audrey Velasquez homered against UT Permian Basin
  • Brockman's homer was her fourth of the season and fifth of her career
  • With 28 homeruns this season, the Hounds already are tied for their ninth most in a season
  •  With 31 homers, Burke is just two away from tying Rachel Mohler for the career record
  • In the opener, Burke also tied Mohler's record of two intentional walks in a game (set 2/7/2002 against St. Mary's)
  • Burke's three walks in the opener also tied a team mark

Game 1
  • The Pioneers sent eight batters to the plate in the second inning of the opener and took a 2-0 lead after a RBI single from Melanie Stephens and a sacrifice fly from Lindy Kennedy
  • Burke cut the deficit in half with a one-out homer in the bottom of the third
  • Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk to Karina Moreno forced Brockman home with the game-tying run
  • Tylia Sylestine's two-run blast in the fourth restored TWU's two-run advantage
  • In the bottom of the inning, Jennifer McElroy cracked a sacrifice fly and Brockman followed with a RBI single to even the game at 4-all
  • Jordan Kisselburg's one-out homer in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the winning hit
  • Elena Garcia batted 2-for-3 with a double
  • Hanna Gary scattered six hits over five innings of relief and fanned four batters with no walks
  • Abby Walker allowed one hit over four innings to earn the win for TWU

Game 2
  • A two-out walk in the fifth followed by a stolen base allowed TWU to snap a 1-all tie on Kisselburg's RBI single
  • One batter later, Hazel Puempel's two-run homer gave Texas Woman's a 4-1 lead
  • The Pioneers extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the seventh
  • Parker Smith drew a pinch hit walk to lead of the ENMU seventh, while Precious Aguirre and Burke followed with singles to load the bases
  • With one out and a 1-1 count, Brockman homered to left-centerfield to trim the deficit to one run, 6-5
  • ENMU held a 12-9 edge in total hits
  • Jenna McElroy singled and moved into scoring position on an infield hit from Ashley Lopez, but TWU escaped the jam
