Volleyball Sweeps Midwestern State, 3-0

The Greyhounds provided a .308 hitting percentage, the third highest mark this season

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball swept past Midwestern State University on Pink Night/Youth Day, 3-0, on Wednesday evening at Greyhound Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 11-9 on the season, along with a 2-6 LSC record. Meanwhile, Midwestern State slips to 3-15 on the season, with a 1-5 LSC standing.
 
The match began with both teams going back and forth, tied 8-8, but the Greyhounds set up a huge streak against the Mustangs. Eastern posted a 12-6 stretch to go up 20-14 in the set. Mikaela Garvin provided five kills in the mini run, with Gracelyn Stubbs adding a two block assists and a kill to go ahead of MSU. Two more kills from Stubbs and a kill from Adriana Puni ended the set 25-17 ENMU.
 
Eastern wasted no time in the second set, jumping ahead 9-1 in the opening points. The Greyhounds followed that large run with a 9-5 streak to increase its lead to 18-6 over the Mustangs. The Greyhounds found 10 kills and two blocks in their opening 18 points of the set. MSU put together a small streak to cut the Hounds lead, but Eastern claimed the second set, 25-13 over the Midwestern State.

The Mustangs contested the third set, locking the score at 9-9 in the beginning of the third set. The two teams went back and forth, with each team battling for the third set. The Greyhounds were in poll position to end the set, ahead 23-19, but the Mustangs replied to tie the score at 24-24 to force extra points. Stubbs provided a kill to put the Hounds on match point, 24-23, but Midwestern responded with a kill of their own. However, the Greyhound wouldn't be denied with Stubbs finding a kill to go ahead 26-25, and a MSU attack error ending the set, 27-25, and the match 3-0.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds supplied 47 kills in the empathic win, contributing 53 digs, and 12 blocks in the contest. MSU were held to 33 kills, 50 digs, and no blocks in the match.
  • Stubbs and Garvin each supplied 11 kills in the match, while Puni found nine kills.
  • Kayla Ison posted a match high 23 assists, with Qitana Sapiga finishing with 14 assists.
  • Puni provided 13 digs during the win, while Getsemani Carrasco supplied 11 digs.
  • At the net, Puni collected six total blocks (all block assists), with Stubbs and Kali Nelson finishing with four total blocks.

"We played outstanding defense," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "I loved our energy from beginning to end. Not just defensively, but we won the "hustle" ball battle," said Poyer. "Proud of our kids for tonight's win".
