Sapiga Eclipses 1,000 Career Assists As Volleyball Falls To UTPB, 3-1

Sapiga recorded their 1,00 career assist during the 3-1 defeat

ODESSA, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball were clipped 3-1 against UT Permian Basin on Friday evening at the Falcon Dome. ENMU slip to 11-10 overall, with a 2-7 LSC standing. Meanwhile, UTPB improve to 10-8 on the season, with a 5-2 standing.
 
Eastern started the first set ahead 6-2 with the help from a pair of kills from Mikaela Garvin and Rylee Mapes. However, the Falcons quickly brought the score level at 16-16. The set remained back and forth, until the Greyhounds picked up a 5-1 run to go up 23-20. UTPB battled back to tie the frame at 24-24. UT Permian Basin held out to win the first set 29-27.
 
The Falcons started ahead early in the second set, but Eastern compiled a large stretch to go up 9-8. The Greyhounds kept the score close as the set continued, with neither time being able to take control. With ENMU trailing 22-21, Eastern closed the set on a 4-1 run winning the final three points. Garvin tied the set at 23-23, then a timely service ace from Anjolina Perez put ENMU up one, and Mapes ended the set (25-23) with a kill.
 
The third set saw ENMU jump out to an early advantage, using a 6-2 run to go ahead 14-11. However, the home crowd fueled a 12-2 run for the Falcons to move to set point, 24-16. The Greyhounds comeback was cut short at 25-19, as UTPB took a 2-1 set lead.
 
Like the sets before, both teams were back and forth to begin the frame. Eastern found itself a 12-11 lead midway through the set, but the Falcons found a huge run (9-0) to separate themselves. With the score at 20-11 UTPB, it was ENMU's turn to rally with an 8-1 stretch to set the score at 21-19 UTPB. However, the run stopped there as the Falcons closed out the match 25-20 over ENMU, winning 3-1.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds topped the Falcons in kills, 51-47, but the Falcons had the edge at the net with 10 blocks to the Hounds three. Both teams were even in digs, 76-76.
  • Garvin supplied a match high 17 kills in the contest, Gracelyn Stubbs and Perez finished with eight kills each.
  • Setter Kayla Ison finished with 22 assists, while Qitana Sapiga posted 15 assists in the match.
  • Four Greyhounds eclipsed double figures for digs: Getsemani Carrasco (16), Ison (14), Sapiga (13), and Adriana Puni (12).
  • Kali Nelson posted a team high two total blocks.

"It's always difficult to win on the road in this conference. Though we lost in 4 sets, we had at least two set points in the first set and who knows what the outcome would've been if we had won the first set," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "I'm proud of our no-quit mentality and our effort. I'm proud of our senior setter, Qitana Sapiga, for eclipsing the 1,000-career assist mark and 500 career digs mark in the match," said Poyer

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Sapiga surpassed the 1,000-assist mark during the match, along with picking up their 500th career dig in the contest.
  • Ison and Sapiga both finished with a double-double, with the former finishing with 22 assists and 14 digs, with the latter collecting 15 assists and 13 digs.
  • Eastern look to bounce back against Angelo State University tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 8. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
