4th & 1: No. 3 Angelo State

Greyhounds square off against a ranked conference foe Saturday night

PORTALES, N.M. – ENMU football faces No. 3 Angelo State on the road Saturday night. The Rams hold a 5-0 record coming into the matchup and wins over West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin.

Before the Greyhounds head to San Angelo, take a look at the 4th & 1:

First Down – Last Time Out
Eastern hosted its annual Homecoming game against Central Washington. The team fell 45-17, but saw some positive light from a new gunslinger. Mario Sanchez aided the Hounds offensive attack under center and accumulated 88 passing and 81 rushing yards. He threw his first TD pass to Bryzai White in the second quarter for ENMU's first score of the night.

Second Down – Middle Eight
One emphasis going into the season for head coach Tye Hiatt was for the Greyhounds to win the middle 8. What he means by this is the last four minutes of the second quarter and the first four minutes of the third quarter. ENMU outscored CWU 10-0 in that timeframe Saturday night.

Third Down – Going … Going … Gone
Howard Russell finally broke through for a massive rushing play early in the fourth quarter for the Greyhounds. On the first play from scrimmage, the sophomore all-conference honoree put on his racing shoes for a 75-yard scamper to the end zone. His run was the longest for the Hounds this season.

Fourth Down – Series History
The overall series between ASU and ENMU is fairly close as the Rams hold a 26-18-1 advantage in the battle between conference foes. The Greyhounds last beat Angelo State, 20-17, in 2019 at Greyhound Stadium. In that game, Eastern outran its opponent 327-57. Current defensive lineman, Rapi Sotoa notched two tackles and registered half a sack.

& 1 – Defense Under Control, ST Room For Improvement
Angelo State is the highest rated team in the conference for a reason. Defense. On that side of the ball, ASU is limiting opponents to 258.2 yards per game and only 452 yards on the ground. The program is doing well in most statistical categories, but one area where they have seen room for improvement is on special teams as Asa Fuller has missed five field goals this season.
