PORTALES, N.M. – One trophy down, one to go. Last Saturday, ENMU took home the Wagon Wheel after a 24-21 thrilling victory over West Texas A&M. This week, it's all about the Chile Bowl.
Before the Greyhounds go toe-to-toe with Western New Mexico at Greyhound Stadium, please take a look at the 4th & 1:
First Down – Back Where It Belongs:
In case you are living under a rock … the Wagon Wheel is back! Eastern New Mexico football scored a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining to win the 35th edition of the rivalry game.
Kason Martin threw for two touchdowns and
Kiante Stoker scored for the first time as a Hound while ENMU came out on top Saturday night. The victory marked the first in the annual game since 2018 when they charged the hill at WT's former stadium.
Second Down – Wow Wondeh Wow:
Asa Wondeh was heavily targeted in the team's win over WT. He tied a program record for catches in a game with 15 on the night. On ENMU's final drive, he caught three passes, including two for first downs. Wondeh caught a touchdown earlier in the game to give the Hounds a 17-14 lead. He is second in the conference in receiving yards (798) and TD's (6).
Third Down – Celebrate Good Times:
Eastern will be honoring four seniors for their contributions to the Eastern football squad. Those players include
David Sweet (Roswell, N.M.),
Kevin McCracken (Rio Rancho, N.M.),
Rapi Sotoa (Anchorage, AK), and
Aseli Finau (Anchorage, AK). All four play on the defensive line with Sweet taking punting duties and Finau playing the first-half of his career on the offensive side of the ball. Between the four, they combine for 169 total tackles in their Greyhound careers.
Fourth Down – All In The History:
ENMU holds a sixteen-game winning streak over Western New Mexico and a 43-15-2 advantage in the series. Eastern is 24-6 in home games against the Mustangs. Last year, the Greyhounds held on in an action-packed matchup with Western as
Tye Hiatt's squad pulled off a 50-47 win in Silver City. This year, the Hounds are playing both in-state DII foes for the first time since 2002. ENMU beat New Mexico Highlands 34-18 to begin the season and looks to pull off another victory over an in-state institution Saturday afternoon.
