WBB Starting Five: Fort Lewis & New Mexico Highlands

Women's Basketball embark on the 2022-23 season with a trip to Las Vegas, N.M.

PORTALES, N.M. – As the calendar turns to November, Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball are set to begin the 2022-23 campaign with a pair of game in Las Vegas, New Mexico this weekend. The Greyhounds play its first game on Friday, Nov. 11, against Fort Lewis, with first tip set for 5 p.m. Then, Eastern will tangle with the hosts, New Mexico Highlands, on Saturday, Nov. 12, with an expected start time of 6 p.m.

BACK ON THE BENCH

Head Coach Meghan De los Reyes is back for the Greyhounds after leading the ENMU to the opening round of the LSC Conference Championship, finishing with a record of 10-14, along with a 6-10 LSC standing. graduate Assistant Yaremi Mejia returns for their second year on the staff with De los Reyes, while Martin Pazanin has joined the program as an assistant coach, and Edgar Chavira has been added to the staff as a student assistant. Pazanin comes to Portales after spending time with Loyola Marymount University, where they served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Women's Basketball program.

RETURNING GREYHOUNDS

The Greyhounds lineup this season with a mix of experience and newcomers to the team. Eastern bring back four members from the 2021-22 team: Bella Stone, Julia Chavez, Stacy Ajobiewe, and Alexsis Johnson. Stone returns to the team after starting 18 games and averaging 24.9 minutes per game, leading the returning group.

NEW FACES AT ENMU

De los Reyes brings in nine new members of the team, with five transfers and four first-year students. Lazurea Saunders, Edecia Beck, Ashley Shipley, Alexandria Sariñana, and Deja Adrian all join as transfers, while Corin Camara, Julieta Ceja, Marley Freeman, and KiKi Roberts come in for their first year of collegiate hoops.

PRESEASON POLL

The Greyhounds claimed 10th in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll according to league coaches, sports information directors, and media representatives. Eastern garnered 233 total points, with regaining LSC Regular Season & Tournament Champions, West Texas A&M claiming the top spot in the poll.

SERIES RECORDS

Eastern and the Skyhawks will face each other in the opening weekend for the seventh straight season, with the Greyhounds winning the last three meetings between the squads. The Greyhounds raced out to a 76-57 win in last season meeting, with ENMU holding the all-time series 15-12. The Greyhounds and Cowgirls will battle for the fourth straight season in the opening weekend, with ENMU winning each of those contests. In a tight contest, ENMU escaped as 56-51 winners in last years match up. In the all-time series, Eastern leads 41-8 since the state rivalry began in 1975.
