WBB Starting Five: #5 Eckerd & Western Colorado

Greyhounds host #5 Eckerd for their home opener

PORTALES, N.M. – After waiting over a week since the start of the season, Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball play for the first time in Greyhound Arena this season on Wednesday and Saturday. First, ENMU welcome #5 Eckerd College on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m. and play Western Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m. During this weekend's games, fans can receive a free general admission ticket with the donation of a canned good for each game day. All collected canned goods and non-perishable items will be donated to the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico.

Both games will be broadcast on 105.9 KSEL-FM and KSELCountry.com with Donald "Doc" Elder calling the action. Games will also be broadcast on 106.5 KEND in Roswell and Artesia.

LAST TIME OUT

The Greyhounds enter this week with a 1-1 standing overall after its opening bouts in Las Vegas, N.M. First, Eastern skipped past Fort Lewis College, 73-58, on Friday evening with Deja Adrian leading all scorers with 22 points. The following day, ENMU narrowly fell to New Mexico Highlands University 55-53, with Adrian posting a double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds).

SCOUTING THE HOUNDS

Following the first weekend, ENMU is averaging 63.0 points per game (ppg) and holding opponents to 56.5 ppg (a +6.5 point differential). The Greyhounds are supplying a 34.8% shooting percentage, 30.2% from range, and 70.0% from the foul line. On the glass, Eastern pull down 36.5 rebounds per game (rpg), dish out 9.5 assists per game (apg), find 8.5 steals per game (spg), and post 0.5 blocks per game (bpg).
 
Adrian has had a standout first two games in a Greyhounds uniform, leading the team in scoring, 20.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Bella Stone helps the offense with a team-high 3.5 apg, while Lazurea Saunders paces the defense with 2.5 spg.

SCOUTING THE #5 TRITONS

Eckerd comes in as the #5 team in the nation, according to the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll (11/22/22). The Tritons have a record of 3-1, suffering their first defeat of the season against Angelo State, 70-63 (11/22). In its first four games of the season, Eckerd is scoring 71.5 per contest and finding 41.3 rpg, while holding a shooting percentage of 44.8%
 
Three Tritons are scoring double figures: Hannah Wentworth (16.3 ppg), Sofia Persson (13.5 ppg), and Maya Price (12.8 ppg). Persson is the team's leading rebounder with 7.8 rpg, while Lauryn Vieira leads the team in assists and steals holding a team high 33.5 minutes per game.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

Western Colorado will face ENMU after the Thanksgiving holiday, coming to Portales with a 1-2 record. The Mountaineers picked up their first win of the season in its last game, a 62-56 overtime win over Texas A&M-Kingsville (11/19). So far this season, the WCU offense produce 56.0 ppg and pull down 46.0 rpg.
 
Rachel Cockman and Emmery Wagstaff are the scoring threats, averaging 15.0 ppg and 14.0 ppg, respectively. Cockman also leads the team in rebounding, collecting 9.0 rpg. Additionally, Cockman holds a 55.9% field goal percentage, while Wagstaff leads the team with seven made three pointers this season.
