PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball has secured its first two signings of the 2023 recruiting class, announced head coach
Meghan De los Reyes. High School standouts Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez and Ariana Sanchez will join the Greyhounds for the 2023-24 season.
"Adding two skilled and competitive guards like Amelie and Ariana in the early signing period is a great start to this year's recruiting class!" said De los Reyes.
Coming to Portales from Tucson, Ariz., Buffill-Gutierrez joins the program following their season at Sabino High School. The point guard for the Sabercats holds a stat line of 11.3 ppg, 7.0 apg, 5.0 rebounds per game (rpg), and 2.4 spg, and picked up 3A Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) honors, 3A All-Conference first team, and 3A first team all-region accolades in 2022. Buffill-Gutierrez also helped Sabino win the 3A South Region Championship the past three seasons, and a 3A State Championship in the 2019-20 season.
"Amelie is a quick, crafty and high IQ point guard with incredible court vision. She loves setting up teammates by getting downhill and can really draw attention in the paint for kick-outs to shooters like Ariana!" said De los Reyes.
Sanchez stays in their home state, hailing from Albuquerque, N.M. where they are currently a senior at Albuquerque High School. The 5' 10" wing is averaging 17 points per game (ppg) across their high school career, along with 5.0 assists per game (apg) and 6.0 steals per game (spg). Sanchez has compiled First Team All-District honors three separate times, and helped the Bulldogs secure the 5A district championship in 2022. A multi-sport athlete, Sanchez has earned two varsity letters in volleyball at Albuquerque HS.
"Ariana has a beautiful shot, and she is a smooth finisher around the basket who understands the game very well. We love having athletes from our home state of New Mexico and she will represent our state and university with pride and grace," said De los Reyes.
Buffill-Gutierrez and Sanchez will join the Greyhounds this coming fall, following the completion of their high school careers. Both newcomers mark the beginning of the 2023 recruiting class for coach De los Reyes and the ENMU Woman's Basketball program.
"Both of these young ladies are high character, amazing people as well as smart and passionate basketball players, and they will be fun to watch together for the next four years!" said De los Reyes.
