WBB Starting Five: UT Tyler and #10 Texas Woman's

The Greyhounds take their first conference road trip to close out 2023

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball take their first road trip to Texas this season for a final pair of games in 2023. First, the Greyhounds will battle UT Tyler on Thursday, Dec. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. (MST). Then, Eastern heads to #10 Texas Woman's on Saturday, Dec. 9, with the afternoon matchup scheduled for 1 p.m. (MST).

LAST TIME OUT

The Greyhounds struggled in their opening conference games, falling to St. Edward's, 73-62, and St. Mary's, 65-56. First ENMU dropped its home conference opener to SEU, with Ashley Shipley and Vanessa Oduah each contributing 16 points. Then, St. Mary's bested the Greyhounds with Deja Adrian leading the ENMU offense with 17 points.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

Following opening week of conference play, the Greyhounds are 4-4 overall with a 0-2 conference record. ENMU scores 61.0 points per game (ppg) and holds opponents to 59.8 ppg, with a scoring margin of +1.2. Eastern provides a 39.0% field goal percentage. At the three-point line, ENMU is shooting 27.2%, while sporting a 72.7% free throw percentage. The Greyhounds pick up 36.6 rebounds per game (rpg), pass out 10.0 assists per game (apg), poke away 10.9 steals per game (spg), and record 1.1 blocks per game (bpg).

Both Deja Adrian and Jamila Nansikombi-Gunter each have 12.4 ppg, while Nansikombi-Gunter leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 rpg. Nansikombi-Gunter also leads the team in steals with 19 steals (2.4 spg). Vanessa Oduah contributes 10.3 ppg, with Jaz Salon and Adrian leading the team with 17 assists each.

SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS

The Patriots began the season as the #7 team in the nation in the preseason poll but stand at 6-3 overall on the season with a 2-0 conference record, winning their last four games. Recently, UTT beat Cameron (68-47) and Midwestern State (77-58).
 
UT Tyler rank 5th in the LSC for scoring (70.4 ppg) while having the 5th best scoring defense in the nation (51.4 ppg, 1st in the conference), holding a conference best +19.0 margin. The Patriots are 3rd in the conference for field goal percentage (44.2%), 4th for free throw percentage (78.0%), and shot 31.6% from three-point range. UTT collect 35.2 rpg, rank 3rd in assist/turnover ratio (1.01 A/T), are 5th in the LSC for blocks (2.89 bpg), 3rd in the LSC for steals (11.44 spg), and 5th for assists (14.11 apg).
 
UTT have a balanced scoring attack with six student-athletes recording 6.0+ ppg, as Tina Machalova leads with 13.2 ppg. Montse Gutierrez leads the team in steals and blocks, while adding 7.6 ppg. Leading the team in rebounding, Gabby Elliot records 5.4 rpg, contributing 8.8 ppg. Martina Machalova leads the conference for free throw percentage (92.6%, 25 of 27).

SCOUTING THE #10 PIONEERS

Texas Woman's have been outstanding in their opening nine games of the season. With two wins against nationally ranked opponents this season, TWU are 8-1 overall with a 2-0 conference record. The Pioneers garner a #7 ranking based on the latest poll from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). In the first weekend of LSC action, TWU beat Midwestern State (90-72) and Cameron (69-51).

The Pioneers statistically rank as one of the top teams in the conference, scoring 72.7 ppg (3rd best in the LSC) and allow 61.7 ppg (6th in the conference), for a +11.0 margin (3rd in the LSC). The Pioneers are efficient from the field, shooting 44.0% and 33.1 % from behind the arc (Both 4th best in the conference). At the foul line, Texas Woman's shot 75.8%. TWU are one of the top teams in the conference in taking care of the ball, leading the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.21 A/T, 14th in the nation), while only turning over the ball 11.6 times per game (4th best in the nation). Additionally, Texas Woman's pull down 39.7 rpg (3rd in the LSC), give out 14.0 apg, find 6.0 spg, and post 2.8 bpg.

TWU are led by Ashley Ingram, pacing the team in scoring (17.8 ppg, 1st in LSC), field goal percentage (65.4%, 2nd in LSC), rebounding (8.7 rpg, 5th in LSC), assists (3.6 apg), and blocks (seven total blocks). Leila Patel contributes 15.3 points per game, while leading the team with 16 three-point baskets.
