LAS VEGAS, N.M – Nyles Duren launched two homeruns and finished with seven RBI's in a 10-1 win for Eastern New Mexico Baseball against New Mexico Highlands on Friday afternoon at Brandt Field. The Greyhounds move to 8-12 overall, while the Cowboys slip to 1-16 on the season.
After a scoreless opening two frames, Eastern New Mexico scored the games first run in the top of the third.
Camden Matthews reached base via a hit by pitch, then stole second base to move into scoring position.
Braeton Matthews then reached on a infield single, putting runners on first and second with two outs.
Jonatan Clough stepped up and punched a single into left field, bringing C. Matthews home, ENMU 1-0.
Eastern came back for more in the fourth frame, going ahead 3-0.
Demetrio Archuleta began the inning with a single, then two batters later
Nyles Duren crushed a two-run homerun to left field to increase the Hounds advantage. Meanwhile on the mound,
Noah De La Riva was dealing through the first five innings. The right hander recorded four 1-2-3 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts in his five innings of work.
Duren snagged another RBI in the sixth inning, with a one-out double down the left field line. Archuleta strolled home on the double, after reaching on a double himself and stealing third base. The Cowboys picked up their run in the seventh frame, benefiting from a balk with runners on first and third. New Mexico Highlands had runners reach base on pair of singles, ENMU 4-1 after seven innings.
After giving up the run, the Greyhounds offense plated three runs in the eighth inning. Archuleta began the inning with a triple to deep right field, then
Jack Thompson walked to put runners on the corners. Duren scored Archuleta with a single, bringing the score to 5-1. After a
Jude Perea single loaded the bases, C. Matthews reached on an error to score another run, then B. Matthews reached on a fielder's choice to make the score 7-1. The Greyhounds capped off the scoring with Duren going over the left field wall again, pushing the score to 10-1 ENMU in the ninth. Archuleta doubled to reach base with a one out, then Thompson secured a walk. Duren then brought three runs home with one swing of the bat.
Eastern closed out the ninth inning with a double play and a flyout, as the Greyhounds picked up a 10-1 non-conference win over New Mexico Highlands.
NOTABLE STATS
- The Greyhounds outhit the Cowboys, 14-5 during the contest, with ENMU posting six extra base hits. Six different Hounds recorded a base hit, while four hitters had multiple hits in the ENMU lineup.
- Duren and Archuleta led the Greyhounds, combining for eight hits. Duren finished a triple short of the cycle, logging four hits (single, double, and two homeruns), plating seven RBIs, and scoring three runs. Archuleta was a homerun shy of the cycle with four base hits (single, two doubles, and a triple), scoring four runs in the game.
- Cooper Hamilton and Perea each finished with a pair of hits, while B. Matthews post one hit. Thompson provided three walks, scoring two runs.
- On the mound, De La Riva picked up his second win of the season with five scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Adrian Rubio tossed three innings in relief, surrendering one unearned run with three K's. Julian Lopez closed out the contest with a 1-2-3 inning.
- Jadrian Martinez takes the loss for NMHU, throwing 5.0+ innings and allowing four runs from six hits. Hunter VanCurler tossed a pair of innings, giving up one run, while John Slape hurled two frames, allowing five runs.

"Pitchers threw strikes and we played good defense today behind them," said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. "Offensively, Duren and Archuleta had a heck of a day at the plate as they got us going in multiple innings. We need to get our offense going a little earlier tomorrow and continue making plays and throwing strikes," said Price.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Duren posted a career best four hits (single, double, and two homeruns), seven RBI's, and scored a career best three runs. Duren's seven RBIs are the most by a Greyhound since Daniel Ward plated seven base runners against Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2015 (4/17/15). Seven RBIs is tied for third most in program history during a single contest, with nine RBIs from Derrieck Kennedy against West Texas A&M (4/25/08) standing as the program record.
- Not to be outdone, Archuleta finished with a season best four hits (single, two doubles, and a triple), while scoring a season high four runs.
- Perea collected his first start of the season, finishing with a pair of hits, and four assists at shortstop.
- The Greyhounds beat New Mexico Highlands for the first time since 2015, when the Greyhounds came away 13-4 winners at NMHU (2/13/15).
- ENMU are back at Brandt field tomorrow to wrap up the two-game series. First pitch of the nine-inning contest is set for 12 p.m.
