LUBBOCK, Texas – Wednesday proved to be a tough day in Lone Star Conference play as Eastern New Mexico softball lost both contests to No. 10 Lubbock Christian.
Game 1
LCU beat ENMU 5-0 in the first game of the afternoon.
The Hounds got off to a good start with a leadoff single from
Mikenzey Patterson and a steal from the speedy outfielder. Eastern got a second base runner with a six-pitch walk to
Azalea Martinez, but the Chaps shutdown the opportunity and dominated the rest of the way.
Lubbock Christian went on to score two runs in the first inning and added another pair in the third. The home side plated its final run of the game in the fifth to carry the 5-0 advantage.
The Chaps left eleven runners on base over the contest, but the pitching in the circle gave LCU the ultimate edge throughout the day. After Patterson's leadoff base hit, ENMU did not get another hit until the final frame when
Chanler Groves placed a perfect bunt to give herself enough time to reach first before the throw from the third baseman.
Although Groves got on base with one out, Lubbock Christian put down the final two batters and clinched the series with the victory.
Game 2
For the second time in the series, LCU went to its ace Taylor Franco in the circle. The grad student controlled the final game of the day at near ease.
The Greyhounds began the game with Patterson walking on a six-pitch at-bat, but eight pitches later and Franco got her team to the bottom half of the frame.
Lubbock Christian only needed three innings to score eleven runs as they plated one in the first, seven in the second, and three in the third.
In the fifth inning,
Brook Leger became just the second Greyhound to reach base as Franco misplayed a chopper in front of the plate and the official score was ruled an error.
Franco finished the game with a no-hitter and earned the series sweep for the Chaps in the 11-0 result over five innings of play.
Up next, the Greyhounds welcome Cameron for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. MST.
