CLARENDON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico rodeo took fifth place at Clarendon College this weekend with
Shacie Marr and
Shaeden Marr both scoring points for the team.
"I think our kids are doing pretty well," said head coach
Albert Flinn when asked about the program's performance.
The women's program came into this weekend's rodeo as a top-five team in the region and will go into the next competition in a similar position after racking up 70 points in the three-day event.
Shacie Marr went into Clarendon as the eighth ranked goat tier in the southwest region. She split 5/6/7 after a 6.5s run in the long round.
Shaeden Marr began the week as the thirteenth ranked breakaway cowgirl in the region. She split 2/3 with an impressive 2.1s to begin the rodeo Thursday. Marr picked up an additional 15 points after splitting the average 5/6. The junior from Tularosa, N.M. earned 60 of the team's 70 points.
Flinn reflected on the competition and praised the fact that the women's team almost had all four of their potential scorers near a mark to compete Saturday night. The two other members of the scoring team are
Tyra Tsosie and
Harlee Barela. Tsosie tied for 11th in goat tying. Her 6.7s time was just a tenth of a second away from earning a bid to compete in the short go. Barela almost made it back in the barrels after a 15.86s run. She came three-hundredths of a second away from making the marquee event.
"They are getting close," stated Flinn. "It's a matter of a step here or a step there. A quicker turn or a faster throw. It just happens that fast."
The men's team nearly saw
Tyson Mackenzie make it back in steer wrestling as he took twelfth in the long go. The senior from Canada posted a 9.4s time to finish 0.6s shy of a short round appearance.
Eastern New Mexico now prepares for the fourth rodeo of the season. They will travel to Texas Tech October 24-26.
