Volleyball Notches Conference Victory In Five-Set Thriller With St. Edward's

The Greyhounds slugged out five sets with the Hilltoppers, setting a season best for service aces (13)

PORTALES, N.M. – In a back-and-forth contest, Eastern New Mexico Volleyball (4-17, 1-9 LSC) notched a conference victory over St. Edward's (9-12, 1-9 LSC) in five sets on Saturday afternoon at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

ENMU 3, SEU 2 (25-21, 28-30, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10)

Both Darcy Dodd and Sophia Valdez led the Greyhounds with 14 kills, while Halle Sanders and Randi Crandall contributed eight kills each. Valdez added to the offensive night with six service aces (team high), as Nevaeh Rodriquez supplied a trio of service aces. Running the offense, Cayla Reyes supplied 38 assists during the five sets.

Reyes also led the Greyhounds defense with 20 digs in the match, while four others surpassed 15 digs in the match. Sanders (19 digs, four total blocks), Dodd (17 digs), Imahni Brown (17 digs), and Rodriquez (16 digs) helped the team total 96 digs over the five sets.

At the net, Crandall, Sanders, and Valdez all had four total blocks each. Brianna Hernandez contributed to the Greyhounds frontline with three total blocks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORES

  • Valdez not only notched their first career service ace during the match, but tied a program record for service aces in a single match with six. The personal bests continued with a best for points (22) and tying a season high total blocks (4).
  • Reyes impressed again leading the Greyhounds in assists (38) and digs (20) for the second straight match, along with their 6th double-double of the season. Dodd also collected their 6th double-double of the season.
  • Eastern set a team best for service aces with 13, landing 6th in a single-match record for program history.
  • The Greyhounds earned their first conference win of the season, and the first victory under interim head coach Natalia Burdulis.
  • ENMU head back on the road to battle Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, Oct.30. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. (MST) / 6 p.m. (CST) from Payne Athletic Center.
