PORTALES, N.M. – The 2024 spring rodeo season is expected to begin this weekend as the southwest region programs unite in the Lone Star state for a rodeo hosted by Odessa College. Before the Greyhounds head to compete, please read the Three Barrel Preview:
1.) Race To Nationals: Only one student-athlete has qualified for the short-go in all five rodeos so far this season. Senior
Shacie Marr has been a key component to ENMU's success this season and looks to earn more points in the spring rodeos to earn a shot at competing at nationals. Marr was the top points earner at the Texas Tech rodeo to conclude the fall 2023 season. She will compete in breakaway and goat tying Friday at 9 a.m. She also earned a slot in barrel racing for the Friday performance. Lastly, she will partner with
Justin McCormick in team roping Saturday morning.
2.) In The Coliseum: This weekend's competition will be hosted at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas. Odessa College will be hosting the event for the 40th time in program history. Last year,
Rowdy Norwood saw some success in Odessa as he qualified for the short go in steer wrestling where he went 8.6s in the long round and 5.9s on Saturday night.
Beau Dean also did well for ENMU in the same event as he went 6.0s in the long round. They scored 95 points for the Greyhounds in the rodeo allowing the team to take 11th in the competition. The women's side saw success from
Caitlin Kreider who boasted 7.1s and 7.3s times respectively in the goat tying.
3.) New Transition: A neat aspect of collegiate rodeo is the separation between the two seasons. Two Greyhounds talked about the need for the fall season as a key moment for preparation in the spring. Listen to the preview video to learn more about the upcoming competition and how ENMU student-athletes are preparing to place high at the Odessa College rodeo.
