LEVELLAND, Texas - There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Jacob Walters winning the all-around men's title. This time, Walters won the South Plains College Rodeo to wrap up the season all-around title and the regular season for the Eastern New Mexico rodeo teams.

Walters took home first place in steer wrestling, tie down roping, and team roping along with partner Teagan Roukema (New Mexico Junior College). His 445 points on the weekend led the men's team to finishing first place. That performance on its own, excluding all other point scorers for Eastern's men, would have been good for a second-place team finish.

"It's hard to be that sharp on all your events and that guy, he's just one of the best," said head coach John Sharp. "You just can't beat him and we're really gonna miss him next year."

Walters was one of five Greyhounds to make the Saturday night short round. Bowdy Neece secured third in tie down, while Cutter Pareo wound up eighth in the same event due to a failed tie. Orran Hart, who joined Walters in the steer wrestling short round, finished sixth in the event. Kassidy Lightfoot finished tied for seventh in breakaway after missing her lasso attempt. Her 45 points were the only points scored by the women's team, landing them in ninth.

"She tried it fast and it just didn't quite work for her tonight," Sharp said. "She's gonna be better from the experiences she got this year and I look forward to Kassidy doing great things."

The Greyhound men finished fourth in the Caprock Region standings, while the women finished third. Next on the docket, after lots of training time in between, is the College National Finals in Casper, Wyoming.
