PORTALES, N.M. – Thousands of fans, contestants, and livestock have made their way to Portales for the College Daze Rodeo this weekend. Athletes from the Caprock Region schools have been competing for a College Daze title and a hot start to the new season. The lineup for Saturday's short-go is taking shape, with more to run before the finals are set. Multiple Greyhounds have found themselves on the leaderboards.
BAREBACK
One man struck the 80-point mark on Friday night, that coming from Toby Deudney from Odessa College, who leads the field by three points. Pacen Hemingsen from Western Texas College holds the second place position with a 77, followed by CJ Schultz from Odessa College with a 75.
STEER WRESTLING
4.1 is the time to beat in the bulldogging, held by Jake Deudney from Odessa College, younger brother to the bareback leader Toby Deudney. 5.3 is the tie for second place between Clayton Veldhuizen from West Texas A&M and Kace Hollenback from South Plains College. ENMU's Orran Hart sits in fifth place with a 5.6 and has secured a place in Saturday's short-go.
GOAT TYING
Kameryn White from South Plains College holds the top spot in the Goat Tying with an 8.3. Brinlee Yore was the first Greyhound to go in Thursday's perf, finishing with a 12.9. Kaylee Stroud, Brooke Bruner, Natalie Larabee, and Georgia Shields will get their run in Saturday's slack.
SADDLE BRONC
Western Texas College's Ben Cox leads the saddle bronc riding with an 80 point ride. Four Clarendon College riders are headed to the championship round, along with three from Odessa College.
TIE DOWN
Tagg Bond from Clarendon College set the bar in the tie down with a 10.9 second run. ENMU's Laramie Collen sits in sixth place through Friday night with a 14.5. Reigning Reserve Nation Champion in the event Cutter Pareo will look to pick up where he left off for the Greyhounds in Saturday's slack, along with Hadley White and Bowdy Neece.
BREAKAWAY
ENMU's Brinlee Yore posted the second fastest time in the breakaway of the rodeo with a 2.5, trailing South Plain's College's Salem Brooks by just 0.2 seconds. Zoey Hamming also sits inside the top ten with a 3-second flat run. A slew of Greyhounds in Natalie Larabee, Kassidy Lightfoot, Brooke Bruner, Mia Box, Allie Murphy, Jayden Rodriguez, Shaylee Baxley, Shaeden Marr, and Georgia Shields will still have a chance to flood the championship round in tomorrow's slack.
TEAM ROPING
Walker Dennis is the lone Greyhound within of the top ten currently in the team-roping with a 13.4 second run. Ryder and Chase Kerr from Frank Phillips College lead the pack with a 6.6 second run. Cash Chavez is the lone ENMU roper yet to go.
BARREL RACING
17.51 is the leading time in the barrel racing, held by WT's Shaylee Edmiston. ENMU's Allie Murphy sits comfortably in the fifth-place spot with a 17.76. Mazey Hillrud holds the eight spot with a 17.86 run. Ali May Terry and Taylor Martin will still have their chance to advance to the finals.
BULL RIDING
Two cowboys have made the whistle on the beaches of Portales. Trent Ferrier of Western Texas College scored an 81.5 in Friday's perf. Joining him in the two-spot leaderboard is teammate Hayden Mulvey with a 73-point ride.
Saturday's slack will begin at 9 a.m. at Lewis-Cooper Arena, determining the final rosters for Saturday night's championship performance. Slack and the performance will be streamed live on the ENMU Athletics YouTube channel. The short-go will also be broadcast live on KENW.
