RICHARDSON, Texas – Two Eastern New Mexico University student-athletes have been recognized as members of the Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Class of 2024.
Those individuals include
Samantha Jeffries and
Greg Johnson.
"I'm so honored to be recognized by the LSC and even more thankful for my time at Eastern," said Jeffries on the honor. "I wouldn't be where I am today without my teammates, coaches, and everyone else at Eastern."
Jeffries earned her bachelor's in digital filmmaking and is pursuing career opportunities in the video industry. She was a two-year starter for the Eastern New Mexico women's soccer program. She started 35 total games as a goalie.
The Albuquerque, N.M. native holds the school record for most shutouts (7), fourth in save percentage (.842), and the sixth most saves (101) in a single season. She also holds the third most minutes (3124) played by a Greyhound goalie in their career.
She is an eight-time member of the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll and was named to both the LSC All-Academic Team and College Sport Communicator's All-District teams in 2022 and 2023. On September 5, 2023, she was named the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week after helping the Hounds secure a pair of ties against Adams State and Fort Lewis. The honoree also holds the third most saves (11) in a single game in program history as she did so in a contest versus St. Edwards in 2022.
Johnson finished his collegiate career at ENMU by earning a degree in university studies and is pursuing professional basketball opportunities.
"I want to thank God for giving me strength to finish at a high level on the court and in the classroom," said Johnson on the achievement. "Believe in yourself and trust in yourself and you can accomplish anything."
He played in 59 games for Eastern New Mexico and was recognized with numerous accolades. He is a three-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week, two time all-conference honoree, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) male senior athlete of the year, all-LSC academic team awardee, and a member of the 2024 all-LSC tournament team.
Johnson finished his two seasons in Portales with 880 points, 213 rebounds, and 110 assists. He posted 18.0 points per game as a senior and totaled 38 games in double digit scoring figures. The Little Rock, Ark. native scored 55 points over three games to help the Hounds win their first conference tournament title since 1993.
Jeffries is one of two women's soccer student-athletes in the LSC to receive the distinction and Johnson is the only one from a men's basketball team.
Each year, the LSC gives the scholar-athlete award to one male and one female student-athlete at each institution who is a member of the graduating class. The awardees represent outstanding accomplishments in scholarship, athletics, and leadership.
