First Down – Weekly Rewind: Eastern faced their first setback of the 2024 campaign with a 26-20 loss on the road versus Angelo State. ENMU struggled with turnovers in the Saturday night matchup. The Hounds fumbled four times and lost one of those fumbles. ENMU also gave up their first interception since a game versus West Texas A&M in 2023. Eastern New Mexico outran Angelo State, 303-195. The time of possession battle went to the Hounds as they held onto the ball for nearly eleven more minutes on offense. Eastern continued to focus on high percentage opportunities and ended up successfully converting 3-of-4 fourth down attempts.
Second Down – Pressuring Offenses: Eastern New Mexico's defense is pressuring opposing offenses through the first three games of the season. The program has 12 total tackles for loss.
DJ Moore leads the team with four total, while
Matthew Quartieri has three of them. Both M. Quartieri and
Khiron Green have picked up interceptions for the Hounds. Another key focus is the pressure from
Salofi Aumoeualego and
Dylan Quartieri who have posted two quarterback hurries to open the 2024 campaign. ENMU opponents are also only averaging 26.67 points per game while the Greyhounds are scoring 39.67 points per game.
Third Down – Finding Space: Five different Hounds attempted six or more rushes in the loss to ASU. The leader on the ground for ENMU was
Ja'Calvin Newsom who went 83 yards on just 15 carries. Both fullbacks,
Elijah Zeh and
Ron Craten, found their way into the endzone at Angelo State.
Ron Craten stayed steady on the rush with 73 yards on 22 carries. Craten did not get tackled for a loss during the whole game. Five different rushers had at least one carry go 11 yards or further. In total, Eastern New Mexico rushed 68 times for 303 yards.
Fourth Down – Restful Mustangs: Midwestern State is coming into the game after a bye week. MSU has a 1-1 record after a seven-point win over Missouri Southern and a five-point loss to then-No. 15 Western Colorado. MSU brings back two all-LSC backs in Devin Cross and Jalen March. Cross has 118 yards on 15 carries and March is the go-top rusher with 24 carries and 81 yards. The program is also known to call on Christian Olige's number as the junior from Baytown, Texas has three rushing touchdowns on just six total carries. MSU has primarily called on Sean Jastrab at quarterback. The junior from Walnut, Calif. is 34-of-59 with 398 passing yards. Jastrab has a 57.6% completion percentage and is credited with one touchdown and three interceptions. Defensively, only one Mustang is averaging more than five tackles per game.
