PORTALES, N.M. – The 2024 College "Daze" Rodeo proved to be an excellent way for the southwest region to begin the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) season.
The three-day competition saw 731 total participants representing 18 different colleges and universities.
ENMU men's rodeo placed 13
th overall and earned 45 points from newcomer
Tanner Lockie. The Canada native partnered with Connor Box from New Mexico Junior College in team roping. The duo tied for second in the long round and set themselves up for a seventh overall placing at the rodeo.
"He ropes well," said head coach
Albert Flinn after the rodeo on Lockie. "He has a good chance to get his team to Casper."
Trent Wood was the best Greyhound in tiedown roping over the weekend. The senior from Portales finished his run in 15.7s and placed 51
st in a field of about 110 student-athletes.
As for the women's program,
Shaeden Marr had two close shots at going to the short round. The junior tied for 13
th in goat tying with an 8.4s run. She was just 0.3s away from going to finals in a field that saw 80 total entries. One of the aspects that made her run in goat tying more difficult was a rain storm that hit Portales just 20 minutes before her run in the event. Marr was also the first cowgirl out in barrels. Her 17.71s run was 0.02s shy of a trip to Saturday night's marquee event.
Her teammates,
Harlee Barela and
Shacie Marr, also had runs under 18s in the barrels.
The season continues with a short week as Sul Ross State will host all the programs in the region for a rodeo set for September 26-28. More information will be made available on goeasternathletics.com
