PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico football is set to host Western Oregon at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium on October 11 for the Hall of Honors Game. Before the matchup, please take a look at the 4th and 1 Preview:
First Down – Regrouping Time: Eastern New Mexico lost to No. 16 Central Washington last week, 58-7. The Hounds gave up 371 total yards, including 227 on the ground. The Wildcats boasted 17 first downs compared to just 11 for Eastern. CWU led 52-0 at half with four of their touchdowns coming via the run game. Eastern scored late in the fourth quarter on a drive executed by quarterback
Jarius Stewart.
Second Down – Special Preview: Punter
Ryan Travis is one of the top punters in the Lone Star Conference as he is averaging 40.3 yards per attempt. He has three punts inside the 20-yard line, including one going 50+ yards. Last week, long snapper
Dillon Hein helped Eastern New Mexico continue a drive in a unique way. The Las Cruces, N.M. native recovered a fumble off a muffed punt. The ensuing drive was the Hounds first trip to the endzone during last week's contest.
Third Down – Running For More: Eastern ranks seventh in the nation with 274.8 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback
Chad Ragle paves the way for ENMU with 315 total yards via rush. Freshman
Demarion Finch is the next available option for the program as he ranks third on the team with 165 yards on 44 carries. Ragle and Finch lead the team with three rushing scores each.
Jarius Stewart has gotten some playing time over the last two contests. He has tallied back-to-back games with rushing scores.
Fourth Down – Raising Havoc: Western Oregon is one of the best teams in the nation at forcing turnovers. The program has tallied 12 interceptions and has recovered five fumbles. Both of those marks are in the top two among conference foes. In total, the team's 12 interceptions and 17 total turnovers forced are first in the conference and second nationally. Another key element for the Wolves is their rush defense. The team only allows 85 yards per game on the ground. This ranks 13th in the nation and first in the LSC. WOU is executing quarterback pressure at a high rate as they boast 2.6 sacks per game. One concern for the visiting defense is that they give up 298.8 passing yards per contest, which is the worst mark in the conference.
&1 – Hall of Honors: Six former ENMU student-athletes and a past chancellor were inducted to the ENMU Athletics Hall of Honors on Friday, October 10. The group will be recognized on the field at halftime as part of Saturday's contest. Those individuals include Dr. Steven Gamble, Andrea Aguilar (Lott), Jack West, Dennis Williams, Anthony Pertile, Mercy Rotich, and Maegan Rhoten Paulson. The two honorees who played football at ENMU are West and Pertile. West went on to join the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys organizations. Pertile was an all-american and a three-time LSC defensive back of the year. He is currently a deacon at his local church.
