Texas Woman's downs Greyhounds in four sets

Aaliyah Butler finished with a career-high 11 kills on the match

PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Texas Woman's University (17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25) Thursday evening at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

Junior outside hitter Aaliyah Butler delivered a career-high 11 kills with an impressive .455 hitting percentage to lead the Greyhound attack. Senior Imahni Brown anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 18 digs and added a service ace. Junior outside hitter Sophia Valdez orchestrated the offense with 12 kills and a pair of blocks for the Greyhounds.

"We showed flashes of what we're capable of, especially in that second set," said head coach Karli Bustos. "Aaliyah was exceptional tonight with her career-high performance, and Imahni's defensive presence helped keep us in several rallies. We will continue to work on the little things and get better as a unit."

The Greyhounds struggled to find rhythm in the opening set, falling 17-25, but bounced back with a determined 25-21 victory in the second frame to even the match. ENMU battled closely in the third set before TWU pulled away late for a 25-22 win. The Pioneers secured the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory.

Addison Bartlett added seven kills for the Greyhounds, while freshman Amya Speller contributed eight kills with a .273 hitting percentage.

For Texas Woman's (9-5, 2-1 LSC), Tori Woods led all attackers with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Trinity Blackwood and Jonaida Donowa each added seven kills. The Pioneers finished with a .223 team hitting percentage compared to ENMU's .107.

The Greyhounds will look to bounce back quickly as they host Dallas Baptist University tomorrow, October 4, at 2 p.m. in the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
