4th & 1 Preview: Sul Ross State

Eastern New Mexico hosts Sul Ross State for November 1 matchup

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico is back at home for a second consecutive week after a record setting performance against Western New Mexico. Before the Greyhounds take on Sul Ross State, please take a look at the 4th & 1 Preview:

First Down – Notables Galore: It's no secret that Eastern New Mexico football had several notables from their 59-35 win over Western New Mexico. The offensive showdown began with both teams scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions. Before the half ended, WNMU went ahead with a 28-24 advantage. Halftime adjustments were crucial as Western only earned one touchdown in the second half. ENMU ran for a NCAA DII record 722 yards with Jarius Stewart leading the way with 382 yards on just 32 carries. Stewart had a whopping five touchdowns, which is the most by a Greyhound since 2000. Eastern held WNMU to 315 yards passing and 84 yards rushing. Stewart's remarkable game earned him D2Football.com national player of the week along with his recognition as Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week.

Second Down – Defense Goes Crazy: The most recognizable difference in Eastern's Chile Bowl win was the second half defensive adjustments. ENMU had five sacks and nine total tackles for loss in the win. Dylan Quartieri led the Hounds with eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss. His 1.5 sacks tied DJ Moore with the team lead. Another notable stat from D. Moore was his effort in earning three quarterback hurries. Esaias Swindle had a productive outing for the Greyhounds as he posted six tackles and two quarterback hurries. The Hounds forced one turnover – a fumble forced by Elijah Thorp and recovered by Davin Lowe.

Third Down – Many Options: One of the key aspects of Eastern New Mexico's rushing attack is how many student-athletes are capable of adding yards in a hurry. Three players have 400+ rushing yards and seven have 100+ rushing yards. After a five touchdown performance, Stewart leads the team with seven total. Demarion Finch is second on the team with six touchdowns and Chad Ragle has four touchdowns on the ground. Eight Greyhounds have scored a rushing touchdown this season. Last Saturday, Finch posted his second-straight 120+ yard performance despite having just 15 carries. On the last drive of the game, Logan Howell ran out the clock and earned 60 yards to finish third on the team in the win over WNMU. Ragle added 51 yards against the Mustangs.

Fourth Down – Eastern Is Rolling: The best statistical category for Eastern New Mexico is clearly rushing yards per game (303.1) as they ranked third nationally in that stat. One area to focus on is extending drives. The Hounds convert on 43.2% of their third downs and 53.3% of their fourth downs. Those both rank in the top 60 in the nation. ENMU is also good at keeping time of possession. Their 33:38 per game ranks eighth in NCAA DII this season. Individually, one of the better players for Eastern New Mexico is Ryan Travis who ranks 22nd in the nation with a 41.6 yards per punt average. Defensively, Aaron Warren ranks 12th nationally with 5.50 solo tackles per game.

&1 – Dominate Los Lobos: Sul Ross State comes into Portales with an 0-8 record, including six losses in Lone Star Conference play. They have only totaled 1,491 yards this season which ranks last among all DII programs. The Lobos have gained 844 passing yards which is 152nd nationally and 647 rushing yards which is 146th. SRSU has only scored 78 points this year and has a -401 point differential to opponents. The visitor's from Alpine are allowing 59.9 points per contest and have only forced six total turnovers. One fun stat is that ENMU picked up 49 first downs over the last two games, while SRSU has just 42 rushing first downs this whole season. SRSU has five games scoring three points or less in 2025. The most they scored all season came in a 45-42 loss to Western New Mexico two weeks ago.
