Grad transfers prove to be difference makers in Childress for ENMU rodeo

Eastern New Mexico rodeo completes first half of 2025-26 season

CHILDRESS, Texas – Eastern New Mexico rodeo finished the 2025 portion of the season with a rodeo hosted by Clarendon College this weekend. The men took sixth with the highlight of the weekend coming from a win in tie down roping from Jacob Walters. The women took eighth with Mackinzee Dermody earning points in goat tying.

"Jacob (Walters) finally had a weekend where tie down went his way," said head coach John Sharp when asked about his two graduate transfers from Texas Tech. "Experience matters. They are two solid veteran competitors and are such a blessing to a team."

Jacob Walters and Cutter Pareo both made it back in tie down roping this weekend. Walters put up a 9.7s time to finish atop the competition in the long round. He bettered his time in the short go with a 9.3s time to split 1/2 and earn first in the event for the entire weekend. He moves into the top ten in the region in that event. Pareo took ninth in the long round with a 14.8s time and ended in the same spot overall after Saturday night's marquee event.

One other Greyhound scored points for the men's team. Orran Hart made it back in steer wrestling. The first year Hound from Eagle Bend, Minn. Earned a spot to the short go with the seventh quickest time - 10.5s. Hart managed to run 9.1s in the short round to take fifth in the short go and fourth in average. His 50 points helped the program take sixth overall.

Mackinzee Dermody was the only Greyhound to score for the women's team. Her 7.1s time in the long round in goat tying earned her a 6/7/8 split and trip to Saturday night's competition. The Texas Tech graduate transfer was fourth in the short go with a 6.7s time and took fourth in the average. She helped the program earn an eighth place nod.

"We are looking forward to this break," said Sharp. "Tough rodeos are going to happen. They are not always going to be diamonds."

Eastern New Mexico will be off from competition for three months and then get set for the final five rodeos of the season in preparation for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
