STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The final rodeo of the southwest region schedule was one to remember for Eastern New Mexico. The Greyhounds scored points for both program's and saw one student-athlete earn enough points to continue their season at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).
"We had a good one," said assistant coach
Albert Flinn when asked about the weekend's competition.
A good one is an understatement as
Shacie Marr earned a spot to nationals based on her all-around season performance. The Tularosa, N.M. native finished the year with 848.33 total points over ten rodeos. She qualified for the short go in nine-straight rodeos this season. The only Saturday night she missed was the first one of the season.
Marr completed the southwest region slate ranked fifth in goat tying, sixth in barrel racing, and sixth in breakaway. At nationals she will compete in goat tying and barrels.
This weekend, she guided Eastern to a fourth place overall team finish.
She made the short go in goat tying after placing third in the long round with a 6.4s time. Marr was one of four competitors in the short go to better their time Saturday night. She went 6.2s in the round to split 2/3 for the day and third in the average.
"I'm proud of what she accomplished all year long," said Flinn when asked about Marr. "This girl makes Greyhound nation proud. Her preparation to go to a rodeo makes her stand out. She is consistent with her schedule."
Years of hard work for Marr has given her the chance to compete on the biggest stage of collegiate rodeo.
"I'm extremely blessed to have gotten to rodeo at ENMU for the last five years. It's a huge blessing to get to go and compete at the CNFR and represent ENMU," said Marr when asked about qualifying for the rodeo. "I couldn't have done it without my amazing horses, family, and God."
The men's program earned points for the fourth time this season.
Tyson Mackenzie made it back via a 5.5s run in steer wrestling. He clinched sixth place in the short go and average with a 6.0s time. Mackenzie finishes his Greyhound career on a positive note in Stephenville.
Walker Dennis also qualified for the short go in team roping. His 6.7s time helped him snag a tenth place finish in the event.
Marr will compete at the CNFR, June 15-21. More information will come at a later time.
