PORTALES, N.M. – Former Greyhound football coach and Clovis, N.M. native, Tommy Standefer, was inducted into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association (NMHSCA) Hall of Honor, recently in a ceremony held in Albuquerque. Standefer spent seven seasons on the sidelines for the Hounds, helping the program to a Lone Star Conference Championship in 1991.
Standefer was recognized by the NMHSCA spending over 30 years as a high school football and golf coach at Alamogordo High School. Standerfer was one of four inductees as part of the 2025 class (Charlie Dotson, Marilyn Sepulveda, Buster Mabrey, and Standefer).
After finishing their football career at Lubbock Christian College and UTEP, Standefer joined the ENMU coaching staff as a student-assistant in 1985. Standefer took several roles during his time with the Greyhounds, beginning as the tight ends coach, and working to become the offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator with the Hounds, culminating in the programs first ever LSC Championship in 1991.
Following his time with Eastern, Standefer joined the Alamogordo football coaching staff and enjoyed decades of success with the Tigers, serving as the head coach from 2007-2012. In addition to their coaching roles for the football program, Standefer made a tremendous impact on Alamogordo's golf program, leading the program for over two decades. Winning four state championships, Standefer has guided six golfers to individual titles, while being named NMHSCA Golf Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2024.
