Greyhounds tame Western New Mexico, 3-1

Sophia Valdez leads ENMU with 23 kills on the afternoon

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico volleyball team kept its momentum rolling on Saturday afternoon, taking down in-state foe Western New Mexico 3-1 to end the LSC Challenge and continue a two-match win streak.

"We had to make some changes late in the match and I thought the team responded well to those changes and it paid off," stated first-year head coach Karli Bustos. "I was really proud of our depth today and glad that we were able to keep moving as a unit."

ENMU 3, WNMU 1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 27-25)
  • Sophia Valdez led the charge for the Greyhounds matching a career high 23 kills and a match-high 51 attempts. Valdez also added three solo blocks to the match.
  • Setter Violeta Flores dished out 22 assists while recording 11 digs to post her third double-double of the year.
  • Addison Bartlett recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 17 digs and 11 kills.
  • Imahni Brown collected her 500th career dig as a Greyhound with 13 digs on the afternoon and matched a career-high three serving aces.
  • The Greyhounds recorded 14 kills in the fourth set while holding the Mustangs to eight.

"The biggest difference from the start of the season to right now is the team's ability to stay steady during a tough match," Bustos continued. "The team had a lot of great dialogue on and off the court that allowed to start to not only trust in themselves, but trust in each other a little bit more. Sometimes the cohesiveness of a team can win a match and I think we were finally able to close a match out, which was a big goal and emphasis going into this weekend."

Looking ahead, the Greyhounds will begin conference play on the road next weekend against Texas A&M International on Friday and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
