PORTALES, N.M. - Fresh off an upset victory over No. 8 West Texas A&M, the Eastern New Mexico women's basketball team returns home to face UT Dallas at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 14, at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales.
The Greyhounds are riding high after their 61-57 overtime triumph over the nationally ranked Lady Buffs on Tuesday in Canyon, marking the first time ENMU has defeated a conference nationally ranked opponent since Jan. 16, 2020, when the Greyhounds knocked off No. 1 Lubbock Christian, 69-68.
Senior forward
Chloe Dallas has been the catalyst for Eastern's success this season, leading the team with 14.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive .572 from the field. Dallas was instrumental in Tuesday's upset, delivering 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while anchoring the Greyhounds' defensive effort down the stretch. She has also recorded 22 steals and 14 blocks on the season.
Junior forward
Julieta Ceja provides a reliable secondary scoring option, averaging 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Ceja has been lethal from beyond the arc, shooting .484 from three-point range, and contributed 10 points and six rebounds in 36 minutes against West Texas A&M. She has also tallied 22 steals this season.
Junior guard
Aaliyah Smith rounds out the Greyhounds' top scorers with 9.5 points per game while dishing out a team-high 54 assists. Smith has been active on the defensive end as well, recording 36 steals while shooting .371 from the field and averaging 2.0 rebounds per game.
Eastern's depth has been a significant advantage this season, as the Hounds lead the Lone Star Conference and rank fifth in the nation in bench points per game at 34.3. ENMU's defensive pressure has also been a hallmark, averaging 11.7 steals per game – third in the LSC and 38th nationally.
As a team, the Greyhounds are averaging 71.2 points per game while holding opponents to 60.7. Eastern shoots .413 from the field compared to .383 for opponents and holds a .311 to .296 advantage from three-point range. The Greyhounds outrebound opponents 38.8 to 35.4 and force 21.0 turnovers per game while committing just 17.0. ENMU also leads in assists (14.0 to 11.0), steals (11.7 to 8.2) and blocks (2.3 to 1.9). The Greyhounds' lone statistical disadvantage comes at the free-throw line, where they shoot .636 compared to .702 for opponents.
UT Dallas enters Saturday's contest after defeating Midwestern State 86-74 last Saturday in Richardson. Junior guard Umi Otsuka has been the driving force for the Comets, averaging a team-high 16.1 points per game while shooting .472 from the field. Otsuka exploded for a season-high 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting against Midwestern State while adding five assists and four steals. She has distributed 62 assists on the season while averaging 3.2 rebounds per game.
Addy Self provides a versatile presence for UT Dallas, averaging 9.7 points and a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game. Self shoots .430 from the field and has been active on both ends, recording 60 assists and 37 steals this season.
Danielle Oyakhire has made an immediate impact in her first collegiate season, averaging 9.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Oyakhire posted her third double-double of the year against Midwestern State with a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. She has been a defensive presence with 26 blocks, 17 steals and 13 assists.
The Comets average 65.0 points per game while allowing 60.9. UT Dallas shoots .404 from the field compared to .359 for opponents and holds a .282 to .249 edge from three-point range. The Comets excel at the free-throw line, shooting .725 compared to .703 for opponents. UT Dallas holds a slight 37.8 to 37.3 rebounding advantage and distributes 14.7 assists per game compared to 10.9 for opponents. Turnovers are even at 17.1 per game for both the Comets and their opponents. UT Dallas averages 8.8 steals per game compared to 8.0 for opponents and blocks 4.9 shots per game while allowing 3.3.
Following Saturday's contest, the Greyhounds will have an extended break at home before returning to action February 26 against UT Permian Basin and February 28 against Angelo State at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
