PORTALES, N.M. — With 16:01 to play,
Morgan Fairbanks tallied her second goal of the season to snap a scoreless tie and give the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team (3-8-1; LSC 0-5) the lead against Texas Woman's (6-4-2; LSC 2-1-1). The Pioneers rallied to hand the Greyhounds a 2-1 overtime setback in Lone Star Conference action, Sunday afternoon at ENMU Soccer Field.
The teams played on even terms throughout the contest, with TWU holding a slim 7-6 edge in shots, while Eastern enjoyed a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Texas Woman's had the only shot on goal in the first half.
A pass from
Danielle Caro to Fairbanks on the right side of the Pioneer net set up Eastern's first shot on goal. Fairbanks beat TWU goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead with just 16:01 left in play. Less than five minutes later, the Pioneers leading scorer Natalie Diaz picked up a ricochet off a defender to net the equalizing goal. Each team had one shot in the second overtime period, but Texas Woman's Nancy Chavez found the back of the Greyhound net with 3:28 left in the period to end the game.
Cristina Escobedo had one save for Eastern. The Pioneers finished with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Fairbanks had two of Eastern's six shots in the game.
The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will continue their home stand on Tuesday, against University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
