PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men's baseball team (3-5) lost to University of the Southwest (2-7) in a one sided affair Wednesday, 8-1, struggling to produce runs at the plate the entire game.
The Greyhounds finished the game recording only six hits, compared to the Mustangs who had 16 hits from seven different players, resulting in eight runs scored and seven RBIs.
Jarron Hill (Fr., Texico, N.M. / Texico HS) was given the loss for Eastern while USW pitcher CJ Romero earned his first win of the season, pitching a complete game with 4 strikeouts and one earned run.
Clyde Kendrick (Jr., Vicksburg, Miss. / Holmes CC)) went 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored while
Brennen Pierson (Jr., Chandler, Ariz. / University on New Mexico) went 1-for-4 with the Greyhounds only RBI of the night.
Russell Edwards (Sr., Oceanside, Calif. / Palomar College) came in for Eastern as relief in the top of the fifth inning, where he would pitch three innings giving up three hits, but no runs and striking out four batters.
The Greyhounds contained USW to two scoring inning, the second and third, where USW put up two and six runs, respectively. Eastern's lone run scored came in the bottom of the fifth inning.
While the Greyhounds were making solid contact at the plate all night, nothing good go right for the team as ball after ball flew out to centerfield only to stop short of the track. USW did earn their win though, making only one error on the night and playing exceptional defense behind the mound.
Eastern will head to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend to play a three game series with Lubbock Christian University, Feb. 20-21. After the double header Saturday the Greyhounds will take a week off preparing for a four game home stand against Tarleton State Feb. 27-March 1.
