CANYON, TEXAS — The Eastern New Mexico baseball team (4-8, 0-1 LSC) fell to West Texas A&M University (10-7, 2-3 LSC) in their first Lone Star Conference game of the season Friday night, 8-6.
The Greyhounds took an early lead, scoring three runs in their first inning off a
Justin Paul (Jr., Papillion, Neb. / Highland CC) homerun to center field. The Buffaloes scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first and proceeded to score two more in the following inning.
Eastern managed to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning, but quickly lost the lead again in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh the Greyhounds found life when
Clyde Kendrick (Jr., Vicksburg, Miss. / Holmes CC) hit a single to drive in a run and advance Paul to third base. Paul followed Kendrick's single by stealing home, giving the Greyhounds a one run lead.
It wasn't meant to be though and Eastern's lead lasted as quickly as it was gained, with West Texas scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the Greyhounds fate.
James Gray (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla. / East Carolina University) was given the loss for Eastern, recording 2.2 innings of work and two strikeouts.
Zach Shank (RFr., Gallup, N.M. / Oklahoma Baptist University) pitched for innings in relief, recording one earned run and a team-high three strikeouts.
Daniel Ward (So., Cleveland, Ohio / Clovis CC) and Paul were the only two Greyhounds with multiple hits (2), while Paul led all players with three RBIs from his three shot homerun in the first.
The Greyhounds will continue their series with the Buffaloes Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. (MST) and finish Sunday with their final game starting at 12:00 p.m. (MST).
