Greyhounds Fall to West Texas in Ninth Inning, 7-4

Sunday, March 08, 2015

CANYON, TEXAS — In the final game of a four game series with West Texas A&M University, the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team battled back from a two run deficit to take the lead, only to see it lost in heartbreaking fashion the very next inning, losing the game 7-4.

With the game scoreless through five innings, in the bottom of the sixth West Texas (12-8, 4-4 LSC) managed to put two runs on the board giving them the 2-0 lead.  Again two innings went by with no scores from either team, only to see the Greyhounds (5-10, 1-3 LSC) combine for three hits and four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

In a game that contained almost no offense heading into the final inning, Eastern's explosive series at bat seemed like it would be enough to take the contest.  Yet, in similar fashion to every game in the series thus far, the trailing team would once again answer with an explosive inning of their own.

Scoring one run early in the inning to cut the Greyhound lead to 4-3, with two outs, an 0-2 count and the bases loaded, West Texas hit a homerun over the right field wall for a grand slam, giving the Buffaloes the 7-4 walk off win.

Clyde Kendrick (Sr., Vicksburg, Miss. / Holmes CC) threw six innings for Eastern, giving up only two hits and two earned runs while throwing seven strikeouts in 112 pitches.  Jonathan Joy (So., Las Cruces, N.M. / Las Cruces HS) stepped in as relief for the Greyhounds, pitching 1.2 innings and only throwing 19 pitches, allowing one hit and no runs.

Eastern recorded five hits and four RBIs in the matchup, led by Chris Sanders (Sr., Murrieta, Calif. / Palomar College) who had two hits and two RBIs in four at bats.  Charles Sandberg Jr. (Jr., Bradenton, Fla. / State College of Fla. Manatee-Sarasota) also recorded a hit in the game, keeping pace with the top hitters in the LSC.

Sandberg sits sixth overall in hitting, with a .379 average and 22 hits.  Kendrick sits just outside the top 10 in the conference in pitching, with a 4.02 ERA and a 1-0 record.

The Greyhounds have four games slated for next week, with the team heading to Kingsville, Texas to take on Texas A&M Kingsville March 13-15 for a four game series.
