HOBBS, N.M. — Two Greyhounds hit homeruns in Eastern New Mexico University baseball team's 10-9 loss to University of the Southwest Tuesday, giving up the season series 2-1 in the Mustangs favor.
Justin Paul and
Mark Foley both went 2-for-5 from the plate, each recording a homerun and three RBIs for the Greyhounds (15-28). Paul now leads the team with the longest consecutive streak reaching base at 13 and in games with multiple RBIs at 10.
Daniel Ward recorded two RBIs and one hit, improving his consecutive games with at least one hit to a team-high to 10. Ward also made several outstanding defensive plays from third base, continuing his high level of play on both sides of the plate.
The team took an early four run lead in the first inning but the Mustangs (18-37) would soon answer with three runs of their own. Scoring went back and forth with a run there or two runs here, until the Mustangs scored four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the 10-8 lead. ENMU managed to score on run in the ninth, but couldn't manage to score again.
Rusty Edwards had one of his best performances on the year in relief, pitching three innings allowing only one hit and one earned run, while striking out seven batters.
The Greyhounds will travel to San Angelo, Texas, this weekend for their final regular season series against Angelo State. ENMU will need to sweep the Rams to have a chance of making the postseason.
