Kuany Transfers to Eastern for 2018-19 Basketball Season

PORTALES, NM — Eastern New Mexico University Men's Basketball Coach Tres Segler has announced the signing of 6'7 forward Deng Kuany. The Australian native comes to ENMU after a junior college tour at Miles Community College in Mont.

Kuany is a very skilled forward with the size and strength to play the post in the highly-competitive Lone Star Conference. He also possesses enough perimeter skills and 3-point shooting ability to become a true threat as a pick-and-pop forward as well.

Coach Segler stated, "Deng is a huge addition to our program! His athleticism and mobility at his size is truly special. Being raised in Australia, his game shows a skill level and a developmental advancement that is not common in American forwards today. I believe that he will be able to defensively guard both the 4 and the 5 in the Lone Star Conference, and offensively he will be a mismatch at both positions for other teams trying to guard him. He shoots the ball very well from the perimeter for his size, and were very excited about him being able to stretch the defense in our pick and roll system."

Kuany averaged 12 points and seven rebounds as a sophomore at Miles CC while shooting 29% from three-point range. As a freshman he shot a staggering 47% from the three-point stripe, and the Greyhounds are excited to see him cash in on those perimeter shots. Deng showed his skills on the passing side of things averaging 2 assists a game as big man.

Segler notes, "Deng has a very high ability to move fluidly with the basketball. Not many big men can get a rebound and go coast-to-coast without the entire gym covering their eyes. Deng can do things like that naturally, and it's going to help us play faster with big men like him that can help us rebound tough and advance the ball off the dribble. He's a very unselfish player, and he's proven his ability to be a scoring passer that sets up other teammates for easy opportunities. Big men dishing out assists are the types of winning plays that we need here at ENMU to reach the top of the Lone Star Conference. I am also excited about Deng's long wingspan. Were blessed this season to have some great length and size around the rim, and in the modern era of the "wall-up" defensive play in the post, I am much more confident that we can protect our rim."

Kuany is very connected in the Australian hoops scene, and several of his family members have made huge impacts in both Australian basketball and American basketball. The Greyhounds are excited make connections "down under," and Greyhound Nation is ready to welcome Deng Kuany with open arms.
