Vargas Earns Fifth Player of the Week Accolade for Eastern New Mexico Football

RICHARDSON, TEXAS – Senior Tyler Vargas has been named the Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Hound's 48-17 win over Western New Mexico.

Vargas connected on both field goal attempts for the game and went 6-for-6 on PAT tries to accumulate 12 points for the Greyhounds. The San Diego, Calif. is the fifth Greyhound to receive Player of the Week accolades this season and is the second Greyhound to receive Special Teams Player of the Week honors after junior Justin Manyweather received the honor on Oct. 7th.

Vargas extended the early Eastern New Mexico advantage with a 47-yard field goal to put the Hounds up 10-0 with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter and then pitched in to a dominant second half performance for the Greyhounds with a 28-yard field goal with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter. Vargas also punted one time for 46 yards and pinned the Mustangs inside their own 20-yard line.

A D2CCA All-Super Region Four Third Team Selection last season, Vargas ranks first in the LSC with 10 field goals made for the year and is 10-for-13 on the season. His 47-yard make on Saturday is the second longest field goal made so far this season in the LSC.

Despite punting just 24 times this season, Vargas ranks fifth with an average punt of 39.9 yards and has pinned the opposition inside their own 20-yard line five different times.

Eastern New Mexico will look to continue their excellent play on Saturday night inside Greyhound Stadium as they take on West Texas A&M in the annual Wagon Wheel Game.
