PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Athletic Director Dr. Greg Waggoner recently announced that head baseball coach
David Gomez has resigned his position in order to pursue other opportunities in the industry in his home state of Louisiana.
"We appreciate the contributions and achievements that David has brought to the ENMU baseball program," Dr. Waggoner said, "The record books have been changed and many 'firsts' have happened during his tenure as coach. Moreover, his student-athletes consistently produced among the top grade point averages in the Lone Star Conference and here at ENMU. We wish he and his family well."
Gomez headed up the Greyhound baseball program for six seasons and saw the program develop a unique style of play and achieve many firsts during his tenure. The Greyhounds won their first postseason game in school history with a 7-4 victory over Angelo State in the first round of last season's LSC Postseason Tournament after going 24-24 in the regular season. Eastern New Mexico led the Lone Star Conference in team batting average for the second straight season (.322) and finished fourth in all of NCAA Division II in stolen bases with 153 for the year.
"I would like to thank Dr. Gamble and Dr. Geiser for first giving me a chance to become an NCAA head coach, and I would also like to then thank Dr. Elwell and Dr. Waggoner for providing me the means to make history here with the program," coach Gomez said, "I will always remember the kids that made an impact here and our history that we made while increasing the roster numbers from the state of New Mexico and our academic achievements."
Gomez mentored a total of 34 All-Conference performers, six All-Region selections, two All-Americans, two MLB draft picks in Clyde Kendrick and Cody Pope, and the LSC Academic Athlete of the Year.
The Greyhounds showcased a consistent offensive approach throughout the Gomez era, setting the two highest totals of stolen bases in school history in 2018 and 2019 as well as the two best team on base percentages in school history in 2018 and 2017. Gomez's ball clubs also featured talented pitching rosters throughout his tenure, as his staff ranked one through five in average strikeouts per nine innings games and produced the top four lowest opponent batting averages in school history as well.
"My family and I love the family we have built here in New Mexico, but we wanted to get closer to our Louisiana family," coach Gomez said, "There's more family for us in Louisiana that we haven't been near in a long time and we felt like as a family it was the right time for us to make that move. Going from a place like here at Eastern New Mexico, where the demands of being a collegiate head coach take away from my ability to spend time with my family, it makes sense for me to move to the high school level where I can take some more time to be around my wife and kids."
A national search for a new head baseball coach will begin immediately.
