Baseball Splits Doubleheader at No.17 UT Tyler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TYLER, TEXAS – The Eastern New Mexico baseball team finished out a three-game weekend series with a doubleheader at No. 17 UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds fell 6-1 in the first game and won the second, 10-9.
 

GAME ONE: UTT 6, ENMU 1

The first game in Saturday's double header was a defensive battle to start out. UT Tyler took the slight 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run from Riley Jepson.

The Patriots extended that lead to 3-0 in the sixth after a solo homer from Lukas Planco and a sacrifice fly from Tommy Tolve.

Eastern responded in the top of the eighth inning with a run after talking advantage of several walks and an error.

UT Tyler added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth frame and then shut down the Hounds in the ninth to secure the 6-1 win.

Trevor Moses led the way offensively for ENMU as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Cole Luedeking and Matthew Kory also had hits for the Hounds.

Josh Lewis pitched the first five innings for Eastern. He was credited with the loss and finished with five strikeouts and one run allowed. Cooper Hamilton and Alex Khun also saw time on the mound.

 

GAME TWO: ENMU 10, UTT 9 (10 INNINGS)

UT Tyler once again took a slight 1-0 lead early in the game, but the Hounds responded in the fourth inning to gain their first lead of the game.

Luedeking got things started with a double center and then headed home after a wild pitch and fielder's choice. Trevor Moses scored the other run of the inning on a single from Jude Perea to give Eastern a 2-1 advantage.

The Patriots managed to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the 3-2 lead.

The Greyhound's continued to battle and tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh. Braeton Matthews walked and then stole second to get into scoring position. He advanced to third on a single from his brother, Camden Matthews and rounded home on a sacrifice fly from Luedeking. With a runner on third and two outs, Moses hit an RBI single to center to make it a 4-3 game.

UT Tyler loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh and then tied the game, 4-4, on an error. The Patriots ended up tallying two more runs to take the 6-4 advantage back.

With bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth, the Hounds saw C. Matthews rope a line drive down the middle for a two-RBI single to make the score 6-6.

The Patriots managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but the Eastern defense was able to get out of the jam and force extra innings.

In the top of the 10th inning, the Greyhounds then loaded the bases and managed to get four runs across home plate after several errors to go up 10-6.

UT Tyler attempted to rally in the bottom of the frame and managed to tally three runs, but the Hounds held on to secure the thrilling 10-9 victory.

Offensively, Moses led the way for Eastern as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and an RBI. C. Matthews finished 2-for4 with two runs and two RBI.

Dalton Thatcher got the start on the mound and allowed just four hits and one earned run with one strikeout in five innings. Liam Sabiston pitched one inning in relief with one hit allowed. Damian Acosta finished out the remaining four innings for the Hounds to earn the win on the mound. He finished the game with three strikeouts and three runs allowed.

Eastern New Mexico is back in action on March 19-20 at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.
