Baseball Takes On Angelo State This Weekend

PORTALES, N.M. - The Eastern New Mexico baseball team heads to No. 13 nationally-ranked Angelo State University for a three-game series this weekend. The first game is set for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 16, followed by a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. 
 

SCOUTING THE RAMS

No. 13 nationally-ranked Angelo State enters the weekend with an overall record of 21-5 and a Lone Star Conference record of 16-5. Last weekend, the Rams took on No. 10 West Texas A&M. ASU lost the first two games, 9-1 and 11-6, but picked up an 8-5 win in the third contest.

Offensively, the Rams are led by Josh Elvir who has a .443 batting average, 44 runs, 43 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and 30 RBI. Jordan Williams has added 37 hits, five doubles, and 26 RBI to go with a .370 batting average.

On the mound, Trent Baker leads the team in wins with a 7-1 record. He has a 2.88 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 50.0 innings. Benjamin Elder has put in some quality time on the hill with a 1.80 ERA, a 5-1 record, and 31 strikeouts in 40.0 innings.
 

LAST TIME OUT

Eastern New Mexico enters the afternoon with an overall record of 6-23 and a LSC record of 5-21. On Tuesday, the Greyhounds welcomed Wayland Baptist for a non-conference doubleheader. The game marked the first and only home contests for Eastern this season. Unfortunately, the Hounds were handed two losses by scores of 12-7 and 7-3.

In the first contest of the afternoon, Rio Granger went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double. Cole Luedeking was 2-for-6 overall on the day with five RBI between the two games.

On the mound in the second contest, Stephen Rausa got the start and had a career-high seven strikeouts in five innings of work.
 

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

Luedeking leads the team in batting average (.322) and hits (29). Nicholas Tamez has contributed 27 hits, five doubles, three home runs, and 18 RBI this season. Braeton Matthews is a perfect 7-7 on stolen bases so far this season, while Matthew Kory is 5-5 and Camden Matthews is 8-10.

Josh Lewis and Dalton Thatcher have seen the most time on the mound for the Hounds with 37.0 and 32.1 innings, respectively. Lewis also leads all Eastern pitchers in strikeouts with 30. Damian Acosta leads the way in wins with a 3-1 record.
