PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico takes a trip to the Lone Star State to race at the Mustang Derby at River Creek Golf Course Saturday morning.
Before the Greyhounds compete at the Mustangs Derby, take a look at the Five Mile Preview:
Mile One – Last Time Out
In its last competition, ENMU showed great strides at the Highlands Cross Country Jam. The women's program took home the team competition, beating out in-state opponent New Mexico Highlands.
Marta Pascoa took home first place in the race, clocking a 19:25.7 on the tough 5K course.
Lethabo Seema and
Kaylyn De La Rosa both finished in the top-5, crossing in 4
th place (22:33.6) and 5
th place (22:45.6), respectively.
Mile Two – Dynamic Devis
Devis Cheruiyot paced the men's program in Las Vegas, N.M., taking home 4
th place with a mark of 25:12.2 in the 6.7K race. The Eldoret, Kenya native has been leading runner for the men's program, posting a top finish for the Greyhounds in each race so far this season.
Mile Three – Marvelous Martinez
Valeria Martinez showed a solid mark in the program's last race, finishing 8
th overall with a time of 23:10.5. The time was just eight second outside of the top-five finishers. The meet marked the first 5k of the season for Martinez.
Mile Four – Championship Preview
The Greyhounds will have their first look at the 2022 Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships course this weekend, with the championships set to be held in Wichita Falls on Nov. 5. During the championships, the women will be run a 6k race and with the men face an 8k challenge.
Mile Five – Race Day
The race starts with a 5k for the women's team at 7 a.m., followed by a 10k run for the men's program. The field features 18 different teams, including Lone Star Conference opponents: Angelo State, Cameron, Dallas Baptist, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Permian Basin, UT Tyler, and Western New Mexico. The LSC schools will also be joined by Southwestern Oklahoma, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Oklahoma City, Texas Wesleyan, University of Dallas, Science & Arts of Oklahoma, North Central Texas, and Wayland Baptist.
