PORTALES, NM - The Eastern New Mexico baseball team opens the 2022 season with four road contests at St. Edward's University. The Greyhounds and Hilltoppers will meet for doubleheaders at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (MT) on both Saturday, February 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6.Â
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERSÂ
St. Edward's begins the 2022 season against the Greyhounds. In 2021, the Hilltoppers finished the season with a 17-23 overall record and 14-18 in the Lone Star Conference.
SEU returns several key players from the 2021 campaign. Allen Morgan finished the year with a .360 batting average, 48 runs, 58 hits, eight doubles, two triples, nine home runs, and 34 RBI. Chase Cos also returns for the Hilltoppers. He ended 2021 with a .331 batting average, 40 runs, 54 hits, 12 doubles, 11 home runs, and 38 RBI.
On the mound, two top arms return for SEU in Jack Granack and Wesley Gafford. Granack finished the season with a 4-5 record and 5.33 ERA, while Gafford had a 4-4 record and 4.60 ERA.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDSÂ
Eastern returns many key players from 2021.
Braeton Matthews and
Camden Matthews both had solid performances in 2021, as they were third and fourth on the team in batting average. B. Matthews contributed 22 runs, 22 hits, three doubles, and eight RBI, while C. Matthews had 24 runs, 29 hits, a triple, and 10 RBI.
Andres Quintana also returns for the Hounds. In 2021, he finished the season with a .196 batting average, 19 hits, three doubles, four home runs, and 20 RBI.
On the hill,
Damian Acosta had a 3-2 record to go with a 10.36 ERA.
Cooper Hamilton also returns after going 2-4 in 2021 with a 5.52 ERA.

Eastern New Mexico begins the 2022 season looking to improve upon last season's 8-30 record. The Hounds were forced to play all conference games on the road in 2021 due to COVID-19 regulations in New Mexico.
