PORTALES, N.M. – Guard Lyron Bennett will be playing for Eastern New Mexico next season after one year at DII Pace University.
"Lyron is a proven winner at our level after playing 38 minutes a game at point guard for an NCAA tournament team last season. He is great at making plays for others as he was top 30 in the nation in assists last season at our level," said head coach
Brent Owen on Bennett. "He also has the ability to make a three or finish at the rim with either hand. He is a gym rat and we look forward to the leadership he will bring to our team as a senior with previous experience as a high school state champion and D2 NCAA tournament participant."
The Boston, Mass. native scored 10.4 points per game over 38.2 minutes per contest for Pace during the 2022-23 season. He helped the Setters finish fifth in conference play while earning a five-seed in the NCAA East Regional.
He finished the year with 17 games in double digit scoring and a pair of contests with double digit rebounds. One of his best games of the season came in a double overtime one-point win over American International where he was the only player to tally all 50 minutes and he scored 16 points and dished out nine assists.
Prior to his time at Pace, he spent two seasons at DII Southern Connecticut State University. During the 2021-22 season he started in 24 games and appeared in 25 while averaging 34.1 minutes per contest. He connected on 13.8 points per game and added 4.6 assists per game.
In 2019-20, Bennett scored 10.9 points per game after starting in all 26 games as a freshman. The NE10 named him to the all-rookie team for his performance. He connected on 44.8% of his shot attempts and hauled in 5.3 rebounds per contest along with 3.9 assists.
He played his high school basketball at Tech Boston Academy (Mass.) where he won two state titles and a pair of city championships. He was also recognized as the Comcast Tournament MVP and the Cities MVP.
