ENMU's College Daze Rodeo proves to be successful weekend

Greyhound women take fourth in tough field to begin 2023-24 campaign

PORTALES, N.M. – The 2023 College Daze Rodeo proved to be an excellent success as 630 competitors showcased inside the Lewis Cooper Arena over September 14 to 16.

"The performance was good," said head coach Albert Flinn after the rodeo. "We have some talent and I am looking forward to see how they work together this season."

The competition began Thursday night with a major rain storm coming before the final 30 entries could compete after the performance round. With two to three inches of rain falling that evening, several members of the community helped push things aside and get the arena cleared for additional runs Friday morning.

The slack proved to be a great day for ENMU Friday morning as several student-athletes saw action in barrel racing, steerwrestling, breakaway roping, tiedown roping, goat tying, and team roping.

Despite the heavy rain over the nighttime hours, each day proved to run smooth with the help of the rodeo's co-sponsor New Mexico Junior College.

As for the Greyhounds, two competitors made the championship round. Shacie Marr went 2.5s in the long round to earn a spot among the top ten in a field of 220 breakaway ropers.

"The breakaway roping field is big," said Flinn when asked about Marr's competition this week. "The hard part is making it to the short round."

In one of ENMU's strongest events, Greeley Eastep placed well in goat tying. In the long round she finished with a time of 7.8s for third in the large field. On Saturday night, she took fifth with a 8.6s result. Overall, she took fourth at Eastern New Mexico's home rodeo and scored 85 points for the team.

The Greyhounds finished the three-day event with 113.33 points to finish fourth overall among a field of 16 teams.

The women's scoring team looks to be locked in for the 2023-24 season as Daisy Dean, Greeley Eastep, Shacie Marr, and Shaeden Marr all posted strong scores with a pair falling just short from an opportunity to compete for a second time over the weekend.

Next week the Greyhounds head to Alpine, Texas for a competition at Sul Ross State from September 21-23.
